The Fire Island Trailer Promises the Gay Asian Rom-Com of Our Dreams

July 2024 · 2 minute read

After a classic trip-and-fall meet-cute between Howie and a man who offers him whiskey to help with his knee (adding “trust me, I’m a doctor”) our protagonists receive an invitation to a house party that is, in a nutshell, filled with rich gays. To that end, a chiseled White Gay is seen telling our protagonists’ friend group that “they may have the wrong house.” The group is even accused of using the group for “free liquor,” which Noah overhears.

“Do not let these people think they’re better than us,” he tells Howie, immediately before one of their friends is seen stumbling and vomiting into a vase, forcing him to backtrack.

To sum it up, the trailer seems to live up to Booster’s aspirations to make the “gay Pride and Prejudice,” as the actor-writer told EW. Like all great art, the notion began as a running gag; but the bit was not truly committed to film until Booster did acid while vacationing on Fire Island, as he revealed in the interview.

Drugs aside, Booster also told the entertainment publication that what really came into focus for him was “chosen family and, specifically, my friendship with Bowen and the connection that we have as queer Asian men in a space that maybe isn't made for us and overcoming that.”

“That was really powerful for me,” Booster concluded.

Fire Island will be available on Hulu on June 3.
